Tomato - heirloom
An heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated (non-hybrid) cultivar of tomato, as opposed to the hybrid varieties cross-bred to lengthen shelf life, thicken skin and protect against disease. In The Cook’s Companion, Alexander refers to five varieties I have never heard of – with beautiful names like Rouge de Mamande and tigrella (with red and yellow stripes). Most heirloom tomatoes in Australia are grown in home gardens. If you would like to purchase heirloom seeds, and grow your own beautiful varieties, visit the Digger’s Seeds website.
